Celebrate Culture, Community & Wellness with UGAMI

Join us on August 2 for a day of connection, celebration, and care at UGAMI’s community-run farm in Detroit!

This special event brings together the Ugandan community and neighbors across Detroit to honor heritage, promote health, and prepare families for the season ahead. Enjoy traditional African foods, live dance performances, and free health services - all in a welcoming community setting.

Event Details

  • Meet the farmers of UGAMI! - Connect with the passionate community members behind UGAMI’s farm. Hear firsthand why farming is such an important part of Ugandan heritage and how it continues to shape life in Detroit today.

  • Tour the community farm - Take a walk through UGAMI’s two-acre farm and explore the crops, growing practices, and community efforts that bring this land to life.

  • Learn how agriculture and culture are woven together in Uganda and here in Detroit - In Ugandan culture, farming is more than food production - it’s a way of life. Discover how UGAMI is preserving and sharing cultural knowledge through agriculture, and how this connection continues to thrive across generations.

  • Holistic herbs education - Learn about traditional herbal remedies and healing practices used in Ugandan communities. This hands-on experience will introduce you to the plants, their uses, and the wisdom passed down through generations.

  • Soccer Competition - Enjoy a spirited soccer match as local players face off in a friendly competition. A great chance to cheer on your neighbors! (Participants TBD)

  • Live Traditional African Dance Performances - Be inspired by vibrant performances from local Ugandan dancers, showcasing traditional choreography, music, and costumes. A joyful celebration of rhythm, movement, and community!

  • Matooke with chicken stew

  • Steamed local beef

  • Locally made peanut soup with matooke

  • African donuts

  • Cost of food, $5 per plate
